    Memory Prince Dermid was the son of William Dermid and Cynthia Minerva Abbott. He was a school teacher and considered well educated for his time. On November 15, 1859 in Henderson County, he married Sarah Eliza Fetherstone.

    On 15 Jul 1862, Memory enlisted in Company D, 7th Battn. Cavalry Regiment North Carolina, he later transferred into the 6th Cavalry Regiment North Carolina on 3 Aug 1863 and transferred out of Company D, 7th Battn. Cavalry Regiment North Carolina on 3 Aug 1863.

Shortly after their marriage the Civil War broke out and Memory enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private in Company D, North Carolina 6th Cavalry Regiment.

    The couple had 9 children:
