    Subject: Re: Bell Family

    Hello,

I have information on Thomas Bell and Jane Montgomery of Rowan County, North Carolina.  Fergus Hall married Mary Bell who was born 12 March 1776.  I believe that Thomas was the son of Thomas Sr. (land records give me this clue so far), however, there was a John Bell in the same county also - most likely a brother??  I have a biographical article on Fergus Hall that lists the first family of Thomas Bell and his 1st wife Jane Montgomery and his second wife Jane or Jean McGuire.  One lady said that he did not have the second wife, but I think he did.

    __________

    222.  Thomas Hall

I am descended from James and Prudence Roddy Hall through their son, Thomas, who was born in 1739 in Dauphin Co. Penn.  When James and Prudence Hall left Pennsylvania they brought their certificate of church membership from the Conewago Presbyterian Church in York County.  James Hall was one of the founders of Bethany Presbyterian Church.  James and Prudence Hall are buried  in the Fourth Creek burying grounds.

In 1752, Thomas Hall came with his parents to North Carolina and settled in what is now Bethany Township, Iredell County.  On Feb. 20, 1764, he married Elizabeth Sloan born 1750, daughter of Fergus Sloan. (More on him later).  The lived on land adjoining Bethany Presbyterian Church and were members when it was organized about 1775.  One June 24, 1789, Thomas Hall was appointed Straymaster.

They were the parents of fourteen children: Prudence b. 1764 married William Stevenson, Reg. Soldier; James Thomas b. 20 Sept. 1768 married Rachel Johnston; Elizabeth b. 18 July 1770 married Dr. James McCorkle; Fergus b. 1772 married Mary Bell; Alexander died young; Thomas James born 28 Feb 1774 married Emma Wallis; Margaret married James Hill; Mary married William Smiley Johnston; ann marrried Lemuel Dickey Johnston; Sarah married Benjamin Knox; Hugh McGrady b. 1786 married Mary Matilda Crawford; Robert Sloan b. 18 June 1791 married Anna King; Alexander (Sandy) married Adeline Sharpe; William Davidson married Elizabeth Gregg.

Thomas Hall was a 2nd Lieutenant, 1st regiment. N.C. troops in the Revolutionary War.  Thomas Hall died 18 Dec. 1804 and his wife Elizabeth Sloan Hall, died 13 Jan. 1831.  They are buried in the Bethany Cemetery.

Fergus, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Hall left Iredell County, N.C. and moved to Bedford County, Tennessee near Wartrace.  Fergus married Mary Bell, daughter of Thomas Bell.  Both families were members of Bethany Presbyterian Church.  In 1812, he purchased land on the South Fork of the Duck River in Bedford County, Tennessee near Wartrace and Haley.

Mary Bell Hall, wife of Fergus, was the daughter of Thomas Bell and his first wife, Jane Montgomery.  Thomas Bell was born 28 April 1748 and Jane was born 15 Dec. 1751 and died 30 Sept. 1787.  Their children were: James b. 20 Sept. 1774;  Mary b. 12 March 1776 m. Fergus Hall; Jane and Thomas b. 13 Jan 1779; Samuel b. 24 Nov. 1780; Fanny b. 25 Nov. 1782 married Swan Pritchett Burnett; Robert b. 11 June 1785; Montgomery b. 21 Sept. 1787.  Thomas Bell and Jane Montgomery were married 15 Dec. 1772 by the Reverend William Irwin.

Thomas Bell was a private in the N.C. Militia during the Revolutionary War and served as a wagoneer.  Following the death of his first wife, Thomas Bell married Jane McGuire: Their children were:  John Carson, James A., Cynthia, Jennie (Jane) and Mary.  He died on 14 Feb. 1825 in Iredell County.  (from my family records I have Rebecca Fine b. 12 Oct .1791, Cynthia b. 2 Oct. 1794, Tensy b. 20 Dec. 1796, John Carson b. 23 Jan 1799, James A. born 134 Jan. 1801), David b. 25 Aug. 1805, and Mary b. 13 Nov. 1807.  John Carson Bell married Elizabeth Holman, James A., our grandfather, married Nancy Payne, and Cynthia married a Robinson)

Fergus Sloan and his wife, Ann Elizabeth Robinson, came to America about 1747 and located a short period in Lancaster Co., Penn.  By 15 March 1755 they were in what is now Iredell County, N.C. for Fergus purchased 640 Acres of land on Buffalo Branch (later Sloan's branch) from John Oliphant.  This was a land grant to Olipant from the Earl of Granville. This later proved to be a significant purchase for Fergus Sloan.  In 1789 about 68 acres of this land were purchased for the Town of Statesville. Previously, Fergus Sloan had deeded portion of his land for the "use and benefit of the Presbyterian Society, commonly called the Fourth Creek Congregation Society. " with the privilege of the spring.  This deed also included the burying ground adjoining the Fourth Creek Church.  During the Revolutionary War, Fergus Sloan served in the Militia as a private.

Fergus Sloan was born ca. 1724 and died in 1812 in Lincoln County, N.C. Ann Elizabeth Robinson Sloan was born ca. 1723 and died in Statesville. She is buried in an unmarked grave in the Fourth Creek Burying ground. Their children: William b. 1753, d. 1827 (Rev. Back in October, John B. Lisle was looking for information on David Beall, father of Mary Beall (or Bell) who married Fergus Hall of Iredell/Rowan Co., NC.

Fergus was born about 1772 and was the son of  Thomas Hall and Elizabeth Sloan.  Fergus migrated to Bedford Co., TN in the early 19th century.  He seems to have married Mary sometime before 1800 in NC, although I have not been able to find a listing of their marriage.  Legend has it that David is descended from Col. Ninian Beall.

I finally had a chance to look this up and found a David in Iredell County:

B-CAROLINA-1  David Beall, b. G1752 d. 1806, Iredell Co., NC  of probable Maryland Parent [G1730]  m. G1773 Rachel Odell, b. G1755. Probably m. in Maryland, as no Odell family in Iredell.  Rachel's mother was Martha Prather, dau of John Smith Prather and Elizabeth Nuthall, who m. James Odell.  (Note, Martha's sister, b. 1729 m. Richard Beall, B-ALEX-215/1722).  Following death of James Odell, Martha Prather m. before 15 May 1779, Robert Lazenby.  Robert Lazenby died 1785 in Montgomery Co, MD.  Some of the Lazenbys are to be found in Iredell Co, NC.  26 Dec 1785 purchased land along Fifth Creek & Robeys Branch on same date that James Bell purchased land, same tract, from Richard & Margaret Robison. (Beverly Allan.) When David Beall d. 1806, Burgess Gaither was named executor of will.  Gaither had previously 1796 been executor to will of Charles Lovelace. 57  David and Rachel sold land to a son of Thomas Summers.58  Other researchers include Shirley Bennett, Shirleyb5@prodigy.net.
          1.  James Odell, b. G1774.  Will (ICW II:250, 30 Oct 1832-Nov 1842) names two additional sons,
                  Thomas A, and James F. (+)
          2.  John, b. G1776 (+)
          3.  Evan, b. G1778 (+)
          4.  Joseph, b.G1780 (+)
          5.  Jean, b. G1782 (+)
          6.  Martha, b. G1784 (+)
          7.  Reason/Rezin, b. G1786, under 21 in 1806 (+)
          8.  David, b. G1788, under 21 in 1806 (+)
          9.  Thomas, b. G1790, under 21 in 1806 (+)

This is the only David I have a record of who would be the right age to be father of Mary, but there's no Mary in the above list of children. Do you have anything which would tie Mary to David?
