    Notes:

Family Tradition as related to John B. Lisle by his Great-Aunt Winifred Davidson Bellegie in family history written in 1958:

"Nine Davidson brothers came to America from Scotland before the Revolutionary War.  Our Davidson line is descended from one of those brothers."

Identifying the connection from her family history to the rest of the Davidson genealogy has been one of the more challenging problems. According to her information a Mister Davidson had twin sons John and Thomas and a daughter Sarah.  John Davidson married Artemesia Norton and a Leander Davidson married her sister Elizabeth Norton.  She related that Leander and John were cousins.  From a thorough analysis of the Leander's family that had been well documented, I could find no clue as to how they could have been cousins.

Using another clue that there was a grandfather Hall, I wondered if they could have been cousins through the mothers.  Leander's mother was Sarah Caroline Hall.  We determined from census data that John Davidson's mother was named Elizabeth and that her husband seems to have died before 1840.  A researcher on the internet provided a clue that Sarah's father was a Fergus Hall, son of Thomas Hall and Elizabeth Sloan of Iredell County.  Fergus Hall had migrated with his family to Bedford County, TN, in the early 1820s.  However, little documentation existed on Fergus Hall's family.

I also research the census data to find out what Davidson's were in Bedford County in the 1820s and 1830s.  I discovered that William Davidson, son of Col. George Davidson, had several sons in the area and their families were not well documented.  By process of elimination, it was either his son John or his son Abner that were the likely candidates, but I could not find Abner in Bedford County in 1830 census, yet I knew he was in the area because of a court case in Maury County.

In July 1998, a contact on the internet found a reference in a rare Hall genealogy - "The Hall Family History" by Mrs. T. L. Adams.  (printed in 1949) to the family of Fergus Hall.  In it Fergus is listed with a daughter Elizabeth who married Abner Davidson!

Further census work found Abner in neighboring Franklin County in 1830 census.  The family structure matches and we have identified that an older son William also existed.  With reasonable certainty we now have the connection.
