John was born in El Paso on December 17, 1921. His father managed silver mines owned by American Smeltering Company in Mexico, where he lived with his family for 16 years before coming to San Antonio to attend Texas Military Institute.

When the war began in 1941, John received a 2nd Lieutenant's Commission from TMI. He was stationed in Mineral Wells for 5 months before marrying Cleo in 1942.
