__________________________________________________________________

In a continuing effort to put these pieces together, I did locate John Mushat (as John Mushatt) in the 1820 Iredell Census.  Now it does make sense that he could have married Mary Davidson, d/o George Lee Davidson. I also discovered that he was supposed to have died in 1843 and that she died in 1869.  Although I cannot find an 1850 or 1860 census listing for her in Lowndes County, AL, there is an index listing for a Mrs. Mary Mushat for the 1855 state census.  I also cannot locate an 1840 listing for John Mushat.  All of this suggests that if there was a Catherine Mushat who married George Lee Davidson, there are no obvious clues to her existence and it is just as likely that his spouse Catherine Lee Davidson was the Catherine Davidson who died in 1847.

There are LDS records indicating that John Mushat was born in 1778 in Rennselaer Co., NY, to a David Mushat and Christine Stewart.  There is no obvious 1790 census listing for David.

None of this changes the basic conclusion that the mother of George Lee Davidson's children was Catherine Lee Davidson, d/o Col. George Davidson and Catherine Reese.
________________________

John Mushat is now becoming a real mystery!

I thought I had found everything and then something new pops up:

Iredell Co., NC
1820 : p. 244, 160010-10100-02, as John Mushatt
1830 : p. 37, 111 001 100 0000 - 021 000 100 0000, as John Mushat

Do we have 2 John Mushat's from New York going to the Carolinas?

On the issue of Mary Lee Davidson.  I did now find her 1860 census record:

1860 Federal Census -
Hayneville PO - Northern Division, Lowndes Co., AL,
p. 562, as M. L. Mushatt : 8 October 1860

697 633 M. L. Mushatt 63 F               1800 17455  NC
        J. M.   "     22 M Depty Sheriff             AL

So, where does this leave us?

We know from the newspaper report that the John Mushat in SC is originally from New York.

If we assume that the John Patrick Mushat born in Iredell County in 1830 was a son of John Mushat and Mary Lee Davidson, then the John Mushat in Iredell County is from New York.

The family groups are enough different for these to be two different John Mushats.

The John Mushat who died in 1844 in SC seems to be the John Mushat who was born in 1778 in Renssalaer Co., NY, s/o David Mushat & Christian Stewart.  However, census records indicate that there was no David Mushat living in upstate New York in 1790 and beyond, and the Mushats from Cambridge, NY were John and William who seem to be gone after 1820.

Let me speculate:

The John Mushat in Fairfield Co., SC is the s/o David; and the one in Iredell County is either a cousin or a nephew, about 5-10 years younger, maybe a s/o John or William, maybe the John Mishett from NYC in 1810 (who may be part of family), or maybe someone completely different.

There is no data to link the Mushats in Alabama to South Carolina.  In fact, the son "J. M." with Mary Lee (Davidson) Mushat in 1860 census puts her in Alabama as early as 1838.

References give the death date for the NC John Mushat as 1843 and the newspaper give the death date for the SC as 1844.  I wonder if the references confused these individuals or if they both did die with a short period of time.

I believe I have exhausted on-line and on-hand resources on this family. It would be useful if someone with Lowndes County, AL, references, such as cemetery lists, etc. could review for more answers and questions.

Anderson V.B. Churchwell: Riverside Community Farmer:Anderson Churchwell, a landholder and farmer in the Riverside / Allen's Creek Community, was 41 years old when he went to Newburg on November 29th 1861 to enlist in the Confederate Army. He served as a private in the 48th Tennesse Infantry Regiment under both Colonel William Voorhies and George H. Nixon. During his absence, his wife is noted to have operated a "safe house" on the Churchwell family farm, affording safe haven and supplies to such noted Confederates as Nathan Bedford Forrest. His son, Jonathon would also join the fight at age 19. Later after the Confederate defeat in the Battle of Nashville, Churchwell's farm was used as a stop for an entire Union Army Corps (approximately 23,000 troops with artillery and wagon trains)during which time the Yankee soldiers burned the fence rails to keep warm. This prompted his wife to verbally assault the Union General in charge, earning her a place in history by being noted in the "Official record of the War of the Rebellion". Anderson Churchwell survived the war and, lived the remainder of his 78 years in Lewis County. He is buried at Dabbs cemetery at Buffalo Valley. (contributed by descendant, Gary J. Wise)
