Victor and Will Bell came up from Charlotte yesterday evening to see their mother, Mrs. Mattie Bell, who is critically ill. _______________ The Landmark (Statesvillle, NC), Tuesday, 10 May 1898, p. 3 Death of Mr. V. M. Bell Death Came After Long and Severe Suffering. Mr. Victor Moore Belle, whose critical illness has mentioned from time to time, died about a quarter past 12 o'clock Saturday night at the residence of Miss Lucy Foster. Mr. Bell had been in failing health for some time and about six months ago underwent an operation for appendicitis. He recovered from the operation and hopes were entertaiined for his complete restoration until a lung trouble, with which he was affected, began to manifest itself and finally resulted in his death. For weeks his death had been expected at any time and the end came as a grateful release from hopeless suffering. The deceased was the eldest child of the later T, L. and Mattie Moore Bell and would have been 30 years old the 31st of next August. He was raised in Statesville and lived here for the greater portion of his life. When a boy, he was for several years an employee of the The Landmark office and all who were associated with him in the office ever help him in great affectionate remembrance. About ten years ago he entered the railroad service, in which he filled at different times the position of flagman, baggage master and freight conductor. His run was for a time on the A., T. & O. road and later on the Charlotte, Columbia, & Augusta. He was baggage master on the latter road at the beginning of his illness. He was universally popular with railroad people and in fact with all persons with whom he associated in any capacity. He had many excellent traits of character -- and especially did his loyalty, his kindness of heart and his general good humor endear him to his friends. About five years ago Mr. Bell married Miss Lessie, daughter of Mr. T. M. Gill, of Olin, and his wife and one child -- a bright little girl about three years old -- survive him. The tender sympathy of those who knew and loved the deceased from his boyhood up goes out to the young wife and the fatherless child. Mr. Bell's parents are both dead, his mother dying during his illness. Two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Morrison and Mrs. Jas. P. Flanagan, and two brothers, Messrs. W. P. Bell, of Charlotte, and Ervine Bell, survive him. The funeral services were conducted from the Presbyterian Church, of which the deceased was a member, at 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The pastor, Rev.
