Notes |
- Abraham Whinery was born about 1795 in North Carolina.
When he was 15 years old, his family moved about 350 miles west to Shelbyville, Tennessee. On 18 December 1813, when he would have been 18 years of age, he volunteered to serve as a private in the West Tennessee Militia in the War of 1812. Although he served just 3 months and 28 days, he participated in both the Creek Campaign and the Battle of Horseshoe Bend under Gen. Andrew Jackson, who was to become the seventh president of the United States.
He later became acquainted with James K. Polk, the eleventh president, and Archibald Yell, the second governor of Arkansas (1840 to 1844) who was killed at Buena Vista in the Mexican War in 1847.
As a result of his service in the War of 1812, Whinery was deeded 50 acres of land in Bedford Co., Tennessee. While he was farming, he became interested in Masonry and was raised as a Master Mason in 1825. Archibald Yell was the Worshipful Master of the Lodge when he became a Mason. Two years later, he was elected a Colonel in the Bedford Co. Militia.
Abraham and his family moved to Benton Co., Arkansas, in 1829 and settled on Spavinaw Creek. This move was prompted by friction in the Cherokee Nation between the Ross and Ridge factions just across the line in the Indian Territory. Abraham was serving as a lieutenant to a regiment of eight companies from Benton and Washington counties commanded by Archibald Yell.
After statehood, Whinery was elected one of Washington counties first representatives and served in the 1836 session. He was elected as a State Senator in 1838 to represent Washington, Benton, and Madison counties. Abraham was elected State Senator to represent Benton and Madison counties in 1840.
He transferred his Masonic membership to Northwestern Lodge No. 36 at Maysville where one of his brothers was Stand Waite, a leader of the Cherokees who was later to become a Confederate General.
