- GASTONIA - Mrs. Thelma Dean Hodge McLean, 91, formerly of 2313 S. New Hope Rd., died Feb. 8, 1999 at Covenant Village. A native of Union, SC, born on July 10, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Gaston Garrett and Lela Pearl McGaliard Hodge. She was valedictorian at Union High School, a graduate of Winthrop College, and was co-owner and operator along with her late husband, the Leon Leslie ''L.L'' McLean Co.; a Gastonia based real estate development firm. She was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Women of the Church, was a member of the Wayside Garden Club, the Sewing Club, The Montreat Scottish Society, Goodwill Club, and author of ''The Family Album'', a history of the McLean Family in Gaston County.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, L. Leslie McLean, Jr and Suzanne Butler McLean of Gastonia; daughters and son-in-law, Rose McLean Whitesides of Gastonia and Nancy Dean McLean and Dr. James Hendry Robinson of Wilmington; and eight grandchildren, Margaret W. Elliott of Belmont, Henry M. Whitesides, Jr. of Belmont, Dr. McLean Whitesides of Marietta, GA, James H. Robinson, Jr. of Wilmington, Albert Lynn Robinson of Charlotte, Leslie Dean Robinson of Raleigh, Elizabeth McLean Brown of Belmont, and Lynn Leslie McLean, III of Gastonia; and eleven great grandchildren.
Funeral is 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel of First Presbyterian Church, with Revs. Wilson P. Rhoton and Rob Messick-Watkins, officiating. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Matthew Brown, and Curtis Elliott. Interment will follow in Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery, York, SC. Visitation is 6:30-8:30 Wednesday at the Covenant Village Parlor. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Women of the Church, 1621 E.
