  The South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research SCMAR, Volume IV Number 1, Winter, 1976 Stephenson and Byers Family Bible Records, York District, S.C. SCMAR, Vol. IV, Winter 1976, No. 1, p.11 Edward Byers (1761-1832) lived on Bullocks Creek, just north of the present village of Sharon in York County.  According to the Carolina Spartan, Aug. 26, 1885, he and his brother-in-law James Meek (who mar. Susan Byers) were zealous Whigs and at an early period joined Sumter's Army.  He was a son of Capt. William Byers who commanded a company in Col. Thomas Neel's Regiment of Militia and who was a Representative of New Acquisition District in the Second Provincial Congress of South Carolina in 1775 and 1776.  His mother was Elizabeth Walton, from what is now Rockbridge County, Virginia.  Edward Byers was born in Virginia and during the Revolutionary War he returned with his mother to her birthplace in 1780 for a brief visit. Edward's sister Elizabeth Byers married the Rev. Ephraim McLean, who was the first ordained minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  They were the parents of John McLean (1791-1830), first U.S. Congressman from the State of Illinois, 1818-19, and U.S. Senator, 1824-25 and 1829-30; Finis Ewing McLean (1806-1881), U.S. Congressman from Kentucky, 1849-50; and grandparents of Col. James David Walker (1830-1906), 1st Arkansas Infantry, State Troops, C.S.A., and U.S. Senator from Arkansas, 1879-85.
