Alt. Birth:
Various secondary sources give Alfred's birth date as this along with a death date of 4 January 1860. I have not found the original source of those dates. The death date cannot be correct because he was listed in the 1860 census taken in September of 1860.

In the 1800 census for James Davidson there are no male children under 10. This would suggest Alfred was born after 1800.

In 1810, he likely should be listed in with his mother Cynthia's husband Nathaniel Hubbard. He shows 2 sons under 10, one of which is likely Alfred.

In 1820, he is probably the male 10-16 listed with mother Cinthy Hubbard.

In 1830, he lists himself as age 20-30 and in 1840 as age 40-50.

The first explicit age we have for him is in the 1850 census where he claims to be age 51, but in 1860 he claims to be age 57.

Taking all of these readings into account and absent any Bible record, it is likely that he was born sometime in 1803.
