James Alexander, born Rowan County, N.C. December 23, 1756, enlisted from Lincoln County, N.C. in August 1778 and served as a private three months under Col. Erwin, Enlisted in November, 1778 and served three months as a private under Capt. Malcolm Henry: enlisted in May, 1779 and served as a private four months under Capt. Isaac White and Col. Campbell; enlisted the last of May 1780 and served as a private in Capt. John Barber's Co. of Hourse, Col, Charles MDowell's regiment; was in a skirmish with Tarleton at Ennoree; enlisted in August or September, 1780 and served as a private three months under Capt. Isaac White and Col. Campbell, was in the battle of King's Mountain.

About 1782 he moved from Lincoln County N.C. to York District, SC. About two years later he moved to the part of Burke County which later became Buncombe County, NC. He was allowed pension on his application executed January 9, 1834. After his death in 1844 his widow, Rhoda Cunningham Alexander, was allowed pension on her application executed April 8, 1847.

From family Bible records attached to pension records. They were married in the York District, SC as deposed by James Watson whose father married then in his house on Alison Creek.

James Alexander was born in what is now Rutherford County, (then Mecklenburg) on Buffalo Creek, December 23, 1756, the son of John and Rachel (Davidson) Alexander.

He moved with his father to Lincoln County and settled on Crowder's Creek near King's Mountain. While living there he fought on the American side in the Revolution at Musgrove's Mill, King's Mountain, Cowpens and other places in northern South Carolina. A camp chest said to have belonged to Lord Cornwallis (but probably Colonel Ferguson) was captured by him at the King's Mountain battle.

On March 19, 1782, her married on Allison Creek, York, South Carolina, a niece of Gen. William Davidson, Rhoda Cunningham daughter of Humphrey and Rhoda Summerville Cunningham.

Somewhile after their marriage, James and his family joined in crossing the Blue Ridge to make that first settlement in Bee Tree Creek. They came from York District, SC, and went across a gap a half mile or more south of the present Long Tunnel. Leaving Old Fort and crossing the creek they went for about a mile west before entering among the mountains, turning to the right and ascending to the gap. From there they went down to the creek above the modern Town of Black Mountain.

The place where he settled became known as the old Alexander Place which land was kept in the family for well over one hundred and forty-five years. James was one of the Justices of the Peace who organized Buncombe County in April, 1792. The United States paid him a pension for Revolutionary services.

James Alexander died at his residence on Bee Tree Creek on June 28, 1844 and was buried two miles away at the old Robert Patton burying ground. His widow died on Jan. 29, 1848. On her death, his body was removed and buried with her body in the same grave at Piney Grove Presbyterian Church about three-fouths of a mile from the Robert Patton burying ground. --by W. E. Bryson

John Alexander was born either in Ireland or Pennsylvania.  He moved from Pennsylvania to Rowan County, NC, where he and Rachel probably were married.  During the Revolution, they lived in what is now Lincoln County, NC.   After the War, they moved with her brothers to the Bee Tree Settlement in what is now Buncombe County, NC.

John married Rachel Davidson in 1754. Rachel (daughter of John Davidson and Jane Tucker) was born about 1730 in Ireland; died in 1796 in Buncombe County, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Rachel Davidson, daughter of John Davidson, was born in Ireland and came with her family as a child to Pennsylvania and then to Beverly Manor in Augusta Co., VA about 1740.  The family then moved to what is now Iredell County, North Carolina about 1749.

She married John Alexander and lived for a time after the Revolutionary War at Bee Tree Creek in Buncombe County, NC, near her brother Major William Davidson.  In the 1790s, she and her husband and her son Thomas and his wife removed to Tennessee, settling near the Harpeth River in Davidson County near the present city of Nashville for the rest of their lives.  (According to one source, she died Crowder's Creek, Gaston Co., NC).
