    • Mary McClanahan Sloan obituary from The Missouri Democrat, dated May 26, 1927

      Mrs. Mary Sloan

      1837-1927

"Mary C. McClanahan was born to Elijah and Harriett "Dunlap" McClanahan on April 19, 1837, near Lexington, Ky.  Here she spent her childhood and early girlhood.  When a young woman, 14 years of age, she came with her parents and two brothers to Jackson County, Missouri, where she resided until she left under the famous Order No. 11.  They were gone about 3 years.  Upon their return the family located on a farm near the present town of Colman, Missouri.  Here she resided with the family until her marriage to A T Sloan, February 7, 1871.  To them three children were born - Hattie Lee, who died at the age of 7 years; Mrs. C G Mills "Margaret" of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, and Charles W of Huxley, Alberta Province, Canada.  She spent all of her married life near Peculiar and about twenty years ago, with her husband, moved to the town where they lived until sixteen years ago, when he entered the Great Beyond.  This neccessitated the breaking up of the home in Peculiar and she went to live with her daughter, Mrs. Mills (in Plesant Hill, Missouri) where she spent the remainder of her life.  She united with the Presbyterian church in early girlhood and since living in Missouri has been a faithful member of the church in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, being at the time of her death the oldest member of this church.  She passed away at 1:45 o'clock Sunday afternoon, May 22, after an illness of several months.

Funeral services were conducted in the Presbyterian church at Pleasant Hill by the pastor, Rev. Park, Tuesday afternoon, May 24, and burial was in the Willis Cemetery near Peculiar.  There was also a short service at the grave."
